In Russia, a Registry for Mining Equipment is Planned
Deputy Minister of Energy Evgeny Grabchak (Evgeny Grabchak) proposed the creation of a unified registry for cryptocurrency mining equipment in Russia. The project's goal is to strengthen control over miners' activities in the country.
The Ministry of Energy suggested creating a unified list of specialized equipment "without which cryptocurrency mining is impossible." This essentially refers to ASIC miners and other devices exclusively intended for mining digital assets. According to the ministry, such a registry would help more effectively identify illegal miners and control their activities.
"The principal task is optimizing the mechanisms for detecting mining activities and more precisely adhering to its prohibitions in regions where it's not allowed," the ministry emphasized.
Starting from the beginning of 2025, a large-scale ban on mining will come into effect in ten regions of Russia. This list includes six North Caucasus republics, new territories, as well as specific areas in Buryatia, the Irkutsk region, and the Zabaykalsky Krai, where restrictions will apply during the autumn-winter period.
In the last two years, miners have increased electricity consumption by 14%, depleting all available capacities in some regions. This has led to problems with connecting new consumers to the power grid. Restrictions will last until March 15, 2031.
The initiative to create a mining equipment registry is part of a comprehensive approach to industry regulation. According to Grabchak, it will allow for more effective control over miners' activities and prevent violations in regions where cryptocurrency mining is prohibited. At the same time, in areas with sufficient energy capacities, mining can contribute to economic growth and the development of innovative technologies.
