Changpeng Zhao's Forecast: Will Bitcoin Become the Global Reserve Currency?
Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) made a bold statement at the Bitcoin Asia 2025 conference in Hong Kong, predicting that Bitcoin will become a global reserve currency. This statement came amid growing interest from traditional financial institutions in cryptocurrencies. CZ's statement resonated with the crypto community, highlighting Bitcoin's evolution from a niche asset to a potential pillar of the world economy.
Key Statements from Zhao
Zhao noted that more companies from the traditional financial sector are forming reserves in Bitcoin for long-term storage. "We are witnessing the evolution of the financial sector. It's encouraging to see traditional financial industries and even governments adopting not only Bitcoin but also other cryptocurrencies," he said. According to him, corporations are issuing multi-million dollar bonds specifically to acquire BTC, which accelerates the shift to Bitcoin as a reserve currency.
Additionally, CZ reminded of the recent Bitcoin peak in July 2025, when the price exceeded $122,000, calling it the "beginning of a bull rally." He also criticized central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) a few days ago, calling them useless in the face of the development of stablecoins that simplify transfers and settlements.
Statistics and Trends
According to BTC Treasuries data, 17 companies acquired Bitcoin for the first time last month. In total, 310 legal entities hold BTC, including 178 public companies, 61 limited liability entities, and 44 funds. Geographically, the leaders are the US (majority), followed by Canada (43), the UK (20), Japan, and Hong Kong (22 combined). These numbers confirm the growing institutional adoption, especially in Asia, where, according to CZ, the crypto market is developing fastest. Despite the current BTC price correction of -1.62%, analysts see this as a temporary setback within the framework of long-term growth.
Analysis and Prospects
As a blockchain expert, I note that institutional investments, including ETFs and corporate reserves, strengthen Bitcoin's position. However, challenges such as regulatory barriers and volatility remain. If the trend of state adoption continues, Bitcoin may indeed compete with the US dollar as a reserve currency, but this will require time and global consensus.
